Elissa Redmiles

Clare Luce Booth Assistant Professor of Computer Science, Georgetown University

Dr. Elissa M. Redmiles is the Clare Boothe Luce Assistant Professor at Georgetown University in the Computer Science Department and a Faculty Associate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. She was previously a faculty member at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems and has additionally served as a consultant and researcher at multiple institutions, including Microsoft Research, Meta, the World Bank, the Center for Democracy and Technology, and the Partnership on AI.

Dr. Redmiles uses computational, economic, and social science methods to understand users’ security, privacy, and online safety-related decision-making processes. Dr. Redmiles current projects focus on security for sexual content and interactions with a particular focus on the mitigation of AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery; building participatory tools for privacy enhancing technologies such as differential privacy; and measuring biases in and ethics of AI-based technologies.

She was named one of MIT Technology Reviews 35 Innovators Under 35 and is the recipient of the ACM computer security (SIGSAC) Outstanding Early Career Researcher Award in recognition of her “pioneering contributions to the field of sociotechnical security.” Dr. Redmiles’ research has received multiple paper awards and recognitions at USENIX Security, ACM CCS, ACM CHI, ACM CSCW, and ACM EAAMO.

Dr. Redmiles has been invited to present her research at the U.S. White House, U.S. National Academy of Science, and European Commission among other international venues. Her research has been featured in popular press publications such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, Rolling Stone, Wired, and Forbes.

Dr. Redmiles received her B.S. (Cum Laude), M.S., and Ph.D. in Computer Science — with a concentration in survey methodology — from the University of Maryland. As a graduate student, she received the John Karat Usable Privacy and Security Student Research Award and was supported by a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP), a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship (NDSEG), and a Facebook Fellowship.
