Job Overview

The Knight-Georgetown Institute (KGI) seeks a Student Assistant to join our small, ambitious team creating research and policy products used by policymakers, regulators, litigators, and industry decision makers in the United States and Europe. KGI operates at the intersection of technology, policy, and research, with a focus on the online information environment.

The Student Assistant will contribute to research outputs and written products that translate complex technical and empirical research into clear, policy-relevant recommendations.

Potential projects include:

  • Tracking and synthesizing consumer protection and product liability litigation against social media platforms and generative AI chatbot companies in the United States, with a particular emphasis on Section 230 and First Amendment considerations
  • Monitoring and analyzing regulatory proposals and implementation experiences for social media regulations related to age-appropriate design, addictive feeds, and transparency in the United States, European Union, and elsewhere
  • Analyzing trends in state legislation and litigation, including in relation to evolving age assurance requirements

This position will work with the senior technologist, the associate director, and other team members, and will report to the associate director.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent research and writing skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work on and appropriately prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Research will primarily focus on legal scholarship, case law, legislative materials as well as broader social science research. Experience with legal documents is advantageous.
  • The candidate should be available for some in-person engagements on the Capitol Campus and occasionally the Hilltop Campus, though much of the work can be completed remotely. The candidate will work up to 20 hours a week for the Fall 2026 semester. We will prioritize candidates who have the possibility of extension for the Spring 2027 semester.

Compensation

The pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is: $23.34/hour.

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.

This position has been designated as Hybrid. Please note that work mode designations are regularly reviewed in order to meet the evolving needs of the University.
